How is a flake floor built?

It starts like any coating job: grinding, crack repair, and a base coat. While the base is still wet, we toss colored vinyl chips over the whole floor until none of the base shows through. Once it cures we scrape off the loose chips and lock everything under a clear topcoat. It ends up looking a bit like granite, with a light texture underfoot.

The steps before the flake goes down are the same as our standard garage coating process.

Why do people choose flake?

  • It hides dirt. Mixed colors hide dust, leaves, and small stains between cleanings.
  • It adds grip. The texture is less slick than a smooth gloss coat.
  • It hides flaws. Patched cracks and uneven spots blend in.
  • It is thicker. A full broadcast adds build to the system.

A lot of garages here hold boats, fishing gear, and hunting gear for trips to the river and the Ozark National Forest.

How do you pick a flake blend?

We bring sample boards so you can see the blends in your own light. Gray and black blends hide the most dirt. Tan and brown blends work well with brick and earth-tone homes. Chip size matters too: small chips look fine and even, big chips look bolder. If you want a smooth, swirled look, we also pour a marbled metallic floor.

Flake floor FAQs

Is a light scatter of chips cheaper?

A partial broadcast uses less material, but most people go with a full broadcast because it hides more and adds thickness.

Can flake go on a porch or patio?

Yes, with a UV-stable topcoat so it does not yellow in the sun.

How do I clean it?

Sweep or blow it off, then mop with warm water and a mild cleaner. Skip harsh acids.
